Telecommunications Technical Officer or Technologist
is currently listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
This course provides students with education in an occupation that is becoming increasingly in demand, both in Australia and globally, due to rapid technological advancements.
Throughout the program, students will acquire the skills necessary to develop, monitor, and perform technical support functions for telecommunications networks, as well as to install computer equipment and systems. Key tasks covered in the curriculum include:
- Installing, maintaining, repairing, and diagnosing malfunctions of communication systems.
- Configuring and integrating network and telecommunications technology with computer software, hardware, peripherals, databases, and operating systems.
- Developing and maintaining documentation of communication policies, procedures, guidelines, regulations, and quality standards.
- Providing technical advice and monitoring the performance of complex telecommunications networks and equipment.
- Planning the development of customer access telecommunications network infrastructure.
- Liaising with vendors, suppliers, service providers, and external resources to monitor contractual obligations and performance delivery.
- Offering ongoing operational support for designing, optimizing, troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and resolving telecommunications network performance issues.
The qualifications embedded within the program include:
- Certificate IV in Information Technology – Networking
- Diploma of Information Technology – Networking
- Advanced Diploma of Telecommunications Network Engineering
Completion of this course may lead to a skill assessment for roles such as Telecommunications Technical Officer or Technologist. These occupations are assessed by Engineers Australia through the Non-Accredited Pathway, known as the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) pathway. Meeting the requirements for these roles may qualify individuals for general skilled migration visas and temporary graduate work visas.
- To be eligible for enrollment in this course, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Academic Requirement: Completion of Australian Year 12 or its equivalent in the applicant’s home country.
English Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through one of the following methods:
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of 6.0, with no individual band score below 5.5. Other equivalent tests such as PTE (Pearson Test of English) are accepted as well.
- Some education institutions may offer an in-house English Placement Test to meet the English entry requirements.
- Exemptions from English proficiency tests may apply under the following circumstances:
- Applicants hold passports from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ, or Republic of Ireland.
- Applicants are enrolled in specific courses such as registered school courses, standalone English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), courses delivered in a language other than English, or registered post-graduate research courses.
- Applicants have completed at least five years of study in English in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
It’s important to note that the English proficiency test results must be valid within two years at the time of the visa application. Additionally, applicants should be aware that this course may include vocational placement.
