Course overview

This program is tailored to prepare students for teaching roles across early childhood, primary, or secondary education settings. The curriculum typically includes a foundational first year followed by specialized studies in either primary or secondary education. Throughout the program, students engage in practical placements within Australian primary or secondary schools, gaining hands-on experience through observation, participation, and practice teaching.
 
Offered at both Bachelor and Masters levels, the Masters program can be completed in as little as 18 months at select universities in Australia. The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is designated by the Department of Home Affairs as the relevant assessing authority for teacher occupations. Completion of an accredited course allows students to obtain a full skills assessment without needing additional work experience, facilitated through the accredited pathway program.
 
Given that Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher and Secondary School Teacher roles are listed on the Medium to Long Term Skilled Shortage List (MLTSSL), completing this program is significant. It enables graduates to apply for general skilled migration visas such as the Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) or State Sponsored (Subclass 190). However, it’s important to note that applicants must still meet all other requirements for general skilled migration visas.

For admission to the Bachelor of Education program, applicants must have completed Year 12 in their home country and meet specific IELTS band requirements:
 
– Reading and Writing: 7.0
– Listening and Speaking: 8.0
 
Similarly, for the Masters of Education program, applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree and meet the same IELTS band requirements:
 
– Reading and Writing: 7.0
– Listening and Speaking: 8.0
 
International students may be exempt from providing English language evidence under the following conditions:
 
– Hold citizenship and a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ, or Republic of Ireland.
– Enrolled in a registered school course, standalone English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS), a course delivered in a language other than English, or a registered post-graduate research course.
– Have completed at least five years of English-language study in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
To qualify for general skilled migration as an Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher (ANZSCO code 241111) or Secondary School Teacher (ANZSCO code 241411), you need to meet certain criteria:
 
1. Obtain a Bachelor’s or Masters of Education from an accredited Australian provider. This degree is essential for passing the skills assessment required for migration.
 
2. Completing a Bachelor’s or Masters of Education in Australia may also make you eligible for the Temporary Graduate Visa, which grants you 2 years of unlimited work rights in Australia. This visa allows you to gain valuable experience in the education industry.
 
As a teacher in Australia, you can work in various capacities, including as an Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher, Primary School Teacher, Middle School Teacher, or Secondary School Teacher.
 
The demand for Secondary School Teachers is expected to grow moderately over the next five years, with around 64,000 job openings anticipated due to a combination of workers leaving and new positions being created. Secondary School Teachers work across various regions of Australia, primarily in the Education and Training industry.
 
Full-time Secondary School Teachers earn around $1,500 per week on average, which is higher than the national average. While earnings may be lower initially, they tend to increase with experience. Most Secondary School Teachers work full-time, averaging around 41.5 hours per week.
